Many people are chosing not to go to Mexico right now but I just got
back from a trip to Teopztlan and it was fantastic. Ninety minutes out
of Mexico City and in the mountains, it was safe and very friendly.
The people and atmosphere were warm and inviting and the scenery was
breathtakingly beautiful. I couldn't give it a higher recommendation -
I would go back in a minute. It was a wonderfully relaxing place and
it had the energy of the ages stored in the magnificent
mountains.Tepoztlan is easy to get to. It is a ninety minute drive
from Mexico City and about twelve kilometers out of Cuernavaca in the
state of Morelos. The roads are surprisingly good until you actually
get to Tepoztlan and then you have to contend with cobblestones, some
broken cement, pot-holed roads and some country lanes. No matter - the
scenery makes up for it all. Here are some wonderful ways to spend your
days in Tepoztlan:
Visit the cathedral, nunnery and museum right off
the market place. You enter through a wall on which the locals have
created two huge scenes made out of various kinds and colors of corn
kernels. One side depicts the revolution and the other the fight for
independence fought one hundred years apart. It is amazing. Once
inside the cathedral you will be surprised at the ancient building and
its convent. Behind the church is a small but very interesting museum
showing artifacts of the area.
Visit the marketplace in the center of town on Friday or Saturday. One
section is given over to food vendors and there are piles of every
kind of fruit and vegetable you can imagine interspersed with sleeping
village dogs. The larger part and lining the streets are artists and
sellers of all kinds of handicrafts. Much of their wares are typical
tourist attractions but there are some things you will find nowhere
else. It is all fun and fascinating.
Go horseback riding. The scenery is too beautiful to enjoy from afar.
Find a ranch that will give you a ride through some of the mountainous
areas. It will be a breathtaking experience.
Take a hike in the mountains or climb up the Incan pyramid Tepozteco.
You will need your climbing shoes and a good constitution as it is a
rugged climb but the vistas from the top can't be beat. Don't forget
to take plenty of water because it is quite a strenuous climb.
Visit La Buena Vibra Spa. The grounds are magnificent, the staff is
wonderful and the spa treatments can't be beat. If you have a chance
stay for a meal. The food is beautifully presented and the taste will
not disappoint. If serenity is what you are looking for Tepoztlan has
plenty of it.
