Authority - 4 Ways To Get It By Being Conversational

A lot of us are convinced that in order to have authority in our
businesses we have to sound like we have superior knowledge. So we
tend to be too objective or sound too much like a teacher in our
communications. But the key to authority is not simply knowledge but
also being able to communicate it with a friendly tone. In this
article you'll find 4 ways to develop that friendlier style by letting
readers into the big picture, using personal language, being at their
level, and respecting them.1. Readers are constantly receiving and
going through bits of information. This isn't knowledge as they just
remain bits of information. They have no cohesion. That is, they don't
hang together to form a pattern of understanding as a whole. In part,
this is how marketing through content works on the internet. So, when
you can, let readers see what you're telling them fits into the big
picture of that topic, or even of your niche as a whole. I just
explained that a little in terms of content and marketing. A simple
connection like that helps readers to make greater sense of what
you're telling them and your topic as a whole.2. Imagine you're
talking to a friend and use similar language. Sometimes, visitors and
readers will want to be told directly about what connections in
understanding they need to make or about actions to take. This is
quite right. They don't want to waste time with trivial information.
However, if you constantly do this they will feel demeaned. You have
to take them with you. For example, sometime you might use a term
like: You must. But better in most cases is something like: How about
trying...? The first is a direction but can feel like a command while
the second invites them to think about it and make a decision for
themselves.3. Talk to them person to person, on a human level. If you
come across as a bit of a proud know-it-all it's doubtful your content
will be read, even if your information is good. Speak as one human to
another. That is, we all make mistakes at some point and it's how we
deal with them that matters. You could even use examples of your
mistakes to make a point about your topic. It's best to keep content
realistic and reasonable. You're more likely to be believed.4. Your
readers are reading your content because they expect to learn
something useful. They've gone out of their way to do so. Therefore,
your content needs to supply that relevant information while
recognising that they are learning stuff, just like you are. If
someone simple throws information at you in a disrespectful way, you
quickly move on, no matter how good it was, and so would your
readers.
