XPI and 7Z are extensions associated with compressed files. Both
extensions are used along with zipped files. While XPI is used by
Mozilla, 7Z is more commonly used by Windows.Developed by Mozilla
Corporation, XPI is a compressed file and is mainly used by Mozilla's
Firefox web browser. Other Mozilla applications like SeaMonkey and
Thunderbird also use the XPI extension. Such files are simple to
install. Users just have to drag and drop the required document into
an open Mozilla web browser window following which the Mozilla
installer automatically installs it. On the other hand, the 7 zip
extension is created with Igor Pavlov's 7-zip. It is an open source
file archiver which has high compression ability. This format can hold
files with sizes up to 16,000,000,000 GB. By default, this format uses
the LZMA compression method. Other compression methods used include
PPMD, BCJ and Deflate.XPI can be opened with applications like Mozilla
Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird and Mozilla SeaMonkey. They cannot be
opened by non Mozilla applications. On the other hand, 7Z can be
opened in a number of applications which include 7Zip, WinRAR, Corel
Win Zip 14.5, Zip Zag, Pea Zip, etc.Comparing both formats, 7Z has a
few advantages over XPI. Firstly, 7Z files are supported by a number
of programs and applications. Hence they are used more commonly than
XPI. Secondly, while XPI is used only for add-ons and plug-ins, 7Z is
used to read and write to other formats. It also supports Unicode file
names, archive header compression and several compression methods. The
large file size supported by the 7Z format is also a major advantage.
The advantage with XPI is that it is easy to install and users need
not do much at all.
