Why is cooking for one person so hard? There are many TV shows and
websites dedicated to all of your favorite foods; foods you should be
able to cook at home. The problem is every recipe you find, every
recipe that looks really good, serves 4-6 people or more! This is one
of the frustrating aspect of cooking for yourself. Here are just a few
tips which will make cooking for one, much easier.First, figure out
what it is you want to eat. Cooking for yourself requires a little
planning so that you can make the most out of every perishable item
you have to buy. For example, you shouldn't mind buying a pound or two
of hamburger because you know it can be frozen and used later. If you
are buying fruits or vegetables, you have to use them in about a week
or they turn bad. Planning will save you time and money!Second, figure
out when you will be able to cook. If you are anything like me, when I
get home from work, the last thing I want to do is stand over a hot
stove for an hour. Pick a time or day where you are able to devote a
couple of hours to preparing food for later in the week. Several
people devote part of their weekend to preparing meals and sticking
them in the refrigerator so they can be reheated later. Again, this
goes back to planning. Figure out a time that works best for you and
make a couple of different items for later in the week.Third, make use
of what you have. If those bananas in the pantry are going bad, make
banana bread. Most food items are versatile and can be used in various
different ways. Minimize the amount of food you waste by being
creative. Cooking isn't an exact science; it is
experimentation!Fourth, make good use of the deals you find at your
local grocery store. Just the other day, I bought a few items at the
meat counter simply because they were on sale. Don't be afraid to try
something new, especially when you don't have to spend a fortune like
you might at a restaurant.Last, have fun! Cooking for yourself can be
a challenge but it can also be enjoyable. Don't worry if something
doesn't turn out the way you expected. Learn from your mistakes and
try again. With a little planning, and a little patience, anyone can
cook for one!
