Heavy Duty Battery Applications

If you look up the definition for heavy duty in the dictionary you
will learn that it means something that is designed for hard wear and
able to withstand unusual strain. Most of the equipment in industrial,
commercial and farm machinery needs a battery that can supply higher
cranking power to start them up. It is in these applications that a
heavy duty battery is used because it can supply the required power
without failing. This type of battery is also made to supply
electricity for a longer period of time than an ordinary battery, even
when used in rough and tough conditions. They are used in electric
vehicles where a constant supply of electricity is needed to run the
vehicle as well as used in gasoline powered vehicles that may have a
lot of electric components that are run on a frequent basis. These
batteries have larger plates than ordinary batteries and their
construction is such that they can withstand shock and vibration which
would normally shake loose the plates in ordinary batteries. Most of
these batteries are built in such a way that there is very little
corrosion, if any, to the terminals. They are meant to be long lasting
with proper maintenance and they are made to withstand higher cyclic
discharge without affecting their performance. The three main types
are: flooded (also known as wet), gel and AGM (absorbed glass
mat).Heavy duty batteries are the batteries of choice for emergency
vehicles, as ambulances and other emergency systems have electrical
systems that are used to save lives and need a source of long lasting
power to provide the electricity to their various tools. EKG machines,
heart monitors and other tools used by EMTs depend on electricity
supplied by these batteries. When people's lives depend on a steady
long lasting supply of electricity then having a dependable battery is
paramount to saving those lives. They are used in a variety of other
service industries as well, such as:* Pickup and delivery
* Short haul
service
* Bus linesIn industries such as these, heavy duty batteries
have the extra power needed for the multi-starts that these vehicles
need, ensuring that the goods, service and people arrive at their
destinations on time. They are often used in construction, where they
are subjected to heavy vibration and rough usage. They are also used
in farm machines which need batteries that can supply high power and
also be able to withstand being used for only a part of the year. These
batteries have proven themselves useful for a variety of reasons, not
least that they can be cycled to 80% and that many of them may last as
long as 20 - 25 years, making them a cost effective battery for
occupations that depend on their large vehicles for a majority of
their livelihood.
