On the Hook Paintings

With years of experience come several rules when it comes to hanging pictures. You should refrain from hanging pictures on all walls you notice unless you've always yearned to live in an art gallery so only hang a picture if a wall appears empty without it. I'm all for hanging pictures in groups, over a sofa, console table, server, or small pier table. But here's another rule. Avoid making the groupings wider than the furniture under it. Hanging pictures of varying sizes closer together helps you achieve a more unified look. You may be one who has a prized collection of bird prints with different frames in kind and size. Hang them close together in pleasing geometrics not frame against frame, however. Then there is the third rule. May pictures be hung in close proximity the wall is a frame in itself which serves to set off a group of pictures on all four sides. The concept of pleasing geometry pertains to arranging pictures to form a square or even a rectangle. If you have four pictures all framed alike and of the same size, my personal choice would be to hang them geometrically in a square over the sofa, or in a straight line over a long table, or vertically above a small step table. If you must hang pictures in a step pattern, do so only on a staircase. Straight lines meeting at nice right angles make for the best arrangements. It's one of the few times I like a little regimentation in my design. It is possible that you possess a set of pictures that have been accumulated over a lifetime consisting of old family portraits, prints, reproductions, and originals. For unification it is important to consider framing and matting everything alike when hanging these together. One friend of mine frames 16 prints in simple gold frames that are matted in forest green. Sensational was the look after being set against a red wall. Another friend added color by matting each picture over her sofa in a different color. In this case the pictures were all of the same size and subject matter. When you looked into a department store model room did you ever think that something was missing? There is an absence of a sign showing someone had lived, slept, ate, and took phone calls in there. That indefinable something called individuality. Never be afraid to display yours in your home. With the department store model furniture can be sold but when it comes to your home it serves to provide you with comfort and pleasure. The best choice in this case is going for your favorite color. The mood of a particular room can be affected by the color you choose. With different colors come carrying emotions. Why not flip through some color charts, looking for nothing in particular until you are drawn to a particular color grouping. Personal choice is most powerful in this situation.
