With years of experience come several rules when it comes to hanging pictures. You should refrain from hanging pictures on all walls you notice unless you've always yearned to live in an art gallery so only hang a picture if a wall appears empty without it. I'm all for hanging pictures in groups, over a sofa, console table, server, or small pier table.But here's another rule. Avoid making the groupings wider than the furniture under it. If you must hang pictures in a step pattern, do so only on a staircase. Straight lines meeting at nice right angles make for the best arrangements. For unification it is important to consider framing and matting everything alike when hanging these together. One friend of mine frames 16 prints in simple gold frames that are matted in forest green. Sensational was the look after being set against a red wall. Another friend added color by matting each picture over her sofa in a different color.
