Passion Vs Age - How Old Is Too Old To Be A DJ?

Well in my mind there's really no age limit and no one but you can
decide when you're too old to DJ. Presently I've been a DJ for over 15
years and it is something that I have a great deal of passion for. I
love to entertain crowds of people, no matter the age; I love to see
people happy about the music that I'm providing. I'm never ashamed to
tell someone how long I've been a DJ because I really believe that the
longer you've been one, the more experience you'll have when it's time
to perform. One of the things that bother me is when I'm at a function
and someone tells me that I used to be a DJ but I gave it up. (Hmmm),
I immediately say to myself - 2 things: 1. that being a DJ wasn't
their true passion and 2. That it was something that they did as a
hobby only. Maybe some people give up DJing because they lose interest
or because they start a family. Whatever the reason is, for us who
have a strong passion for DJing we will most likely DJ until we can't
physically do it anymore. So many might wonder why I chose to talk
about this topic. Lately I've been more inspired by seeing people
older than myself still rocking crowds. For example just the other day
I met the owner of a DJ Company who said he was "58" and he is the
main DJ for a group of Hotels. No I'm not near that age but it just
made me realize that there is no age limit to passion. If you love
what you're doing and it makes you happy then do it. As the saying
goes "your only as old as you feel" and I feel good about music, it's
rejuvenating for me. A release from all the other regular day to day
b.s. that happens in life. So I say to any DJ that has been
discouraged or is asking the same questions, keep the spirit alive and
the heart beating in time with the music!!I mean look at some of the
artist in the music industry today like Jay Z, Eminem, Fat Joe, or R.
Kelly, those guys are definitely getting up there in age. Look at
David Guetta, 42 years old... He's really only had some top 40 hits
the past 2 or 3 years... Tiesto, 41... Some of the biggest EDM guys in
the world.Age just means you have to be mindful and more deliberate
because you have much less wiggle room. I am a firm believer that
DJing and mental/physical fitness go hand and hand. If you are too fat
to squeeze into the booth without breaking a sweat or too weak to
carry your own gear then you are losing the battle to stay in this
game. Stay fit, stay informed, and stay passionate. I plan to rock
parties at the senior centers; oh I almost forgot I already rock at
Senior Centers and Nursing Home Facilities and they always have a
blast, lol.In most cases weight, drug use, booze, whatever, are things
within our sphere to control though admittedly some have to work much
harder than others. Like I said, as we age we have less and less
wiggle room. Poor health and bad habits tend to catch up to us much
faster and have much more serious implications than when we were young
and indestructible. There are exceptions to every rule but typically
age + any uncontrolled bad habit = a liability. People will definitely
hold age against you if there are other factors that add into the
equation. The truth is if the liability equation hits close to home
then Djing will probably quit you long before you quit Djing.Oh and
yes lighter equipment makes being a mobile dj much easier and to save
a couple of years of strength sometimes just hire someone to help you
move the equipment.Stay true and inspired, I know I will, Peace.
