People in countries like China, and the Philippines have known for
centuries that seagrass carpet is a practical, cost-effective, and
long-lasting alternative to home carpeting options. In United States,
it has never been that popular as we generally like a soft wearing,
more pliant floor covering when we want to cover the entire home with
wall-to-wall carpeting. But, if you think about it for a moment your
weekend beach or lake house would be a perfect candidate for a natural
rug such as seagrass, as you will be tracking in sand, dirt, and
moisture more often when visiting on the weekends.There are a few ways
to attack installation of this flooring option, and one that is used
quite often in other countries is to actually glue it directly to the
wood slated sub-floor, or concrete foundation. This method may not be
the best install method, as it would be very labor intensive to pull
it up after a few years to exchange it with new replacement carpet.
Fortunately you can install it much like normal textile carpeting made
here in the states, and you will probably want to do without any
carpet or rug padding to let moisture run off if using concrete or
cement flooring underneath.If you are installing seagrass carpet over
hardwood flooring then you will want to use a variety that will have a
sealed rubber backing to prevent moisture from seeping into the wood,
and creating rot issues in the future. It will cost a bit more, but
will be well worth the peace of mind knowing that those oak planks are
safe from your spouse spilling his beer and kids spilling their
Kool-Aid. Seagrass and Sisal type flooring are pretty resistant to
staining, but you will want to keep a spray can of spot remover handy
for particularly nasty spills as added insurance.Care and maintenance
of natural fiber carpeting is pretty straight forward, and using a
vacuum that has the highest rate of suction is preferable, as the
beater bars of vacuum cleaners power head will do little to loosed
dirt and debris. A high output shop-vac may very well be a wiser
choice to do your weekly cleaning choirs with instead of the normal
upright models. Also, if you live in an area where there is low
humidity, you may actually have to dampen your seagrass carpet from
time to time, and you will know when to do this by the fibers becoming
lighter in color.
