Service Business Owners - Should Your Website Marketing Focus on Just 1 Niche?

Service business owners typically are advised to choose just 1 niche
and focus on that single niche exclusively. However, you may find you
offer 2, 3 or 5 types of service. Should your website focus on a tight
niche or should you have one big site for many niches?(1) Does your
niche have interest in all these topics? For instance, when you target
WAHMs - Work at Home moms - you may find they want to read articles on
business, work-life balance and parenting. In contrast, a blog or site
targeting new entrepreneurs may want to stick to the topic at hand.(2)
Do these topics seem related?Recently I met a "Della," who came across
as professional and polished...until she introduced herself at a
networking breakfast. "I make jewelry," she said, "and I'm an
organizer. Oh yes - I just completed Reiki training."We were exhausted
just imagining all these activities. Della needs to narrow her market
or find a way to show that these fields are related. Often, with some
digging into the truth, you can spin a story that blends these
elements together. For example, Della might share some Reiki practices
that help her create unique jewelry and work effectively with her
disorganized clients.(3) Do your clients buy you or your
expertise?Sometimes your clients want to see you as a
three-dimensional person rather than as "the expert." Life coaches,
psychotherapists and financial planners may benefit from sharing a
3-dimensional view of their experience. However, I'm not sure the
clients of a massage therapist or accountant feel the same way. They
want personable rather than personal relationships.
