Before being able to know how to stop your puppy from biting, it is
essential to realise why a puppy bites. A young dog needs to
experiment with biting, so that it can learn how to control the
strength of its bite, eventually learning not to bite at all. They
need to learn how to control their jaws and develop bite inhibition.
If they are in a stressful situation and they bite before thinking
about it, they will be able to control the bite and hopefully not bite
hard by mistake later in life. The puppy would normally learn within
the litter. The puppy, that is bitten, would normally yelp, causing
the puppy that bites to let go. If the puppy bites mom the lesson
could be painful. The longer a puppy stays with its mother and
siblings in the litter, the better. Many puppies are removed from the
litter at a very young age; it is up to us as its new family to teach
them how to behave. When a puppy bites you, you need to train a puppy
by imitating its mother and siblings by squealing something like ouch!
Then ignore the puppy. This way the puppy will learn that you are
delicate and must not be bitten with any force. You must do this every
time you are bitten. If you are, still having problems when a biting
occurs squeal loudly and then ignore the puppy totally. By withholding
your attention straight after the bite, the puppy will soon learn not
bite, as like all children a puppy craves attention. There are many
good puppy training programs and puppy trainers available that can
teach you how to stop a puppy from biting, as well as many other
common problems associated with young puppies such as puppy potty
training, digging and jumping.
