What Is a Luthier?

What is a luthier? A luthier is a stringed instrument maker. These
are people who are skilled in the art and craft of making violins,
cellos, guitars, and other stringed instruments. If you look around,
you will find them everywhere. There is a luthier in New York, one in
Boston, one in Kansas, one Colorado, even a Utah luthier; several of
them actually, in just about every state.Luthiers usually study under
another instrument make, but some learn the trade on their own through
books, videos, and joining forums with other makers where they can ask
questions and share information. A luthier usually takes years to
master his craft. Many, even the masters, will say that one never
really truly masters the art and that they are always learning. They
strive to bring out the best in the woods they use to build their
instruments.A Utah luthier I am acquainted with builds terrific custom
acoustic guitars that are of the utmost in sound, playability, and
quality. He takes great pride in his work. He makes every custom
guitar a one-of-a-kind instrument with great attention to detail. Each
guitar is like a baby, he nurtures it and tenderly draws out the best
it can be during the construction process.Luthier's are finicky and
picky breed. "Good enough" is never good enough. They always will
strive to be the best and make the finest instruments. If you find a
really great luthier to build you an instrument, like the Utah luthier
I know, you will not be disappointed. They know their stuff and will
make you a truly fine stringed instrument.
