10 Tips For Running In The Cold

In the absence of ice and snow, running in the winter months can
provide quite a nice experience. For those of us in the Southern
sector of the country it is also a welcome relief. I find the summer
to provide ideal climates to work on my speed, and the cooler
temperatures make for a great way to increase miles and focus on
endurance. Subsequently I have a very different program for running in
colder weather.The biggest variable for how to prepare is of course
how cold it gets where your run; so the best judge of how you should
prepare is you. However, here are a few tips that may make your winter
running a bit more enjoyable.1. Moisturize. The cold dries out my skin
very quickly. Running moves more air past my lips as well, therefore
when it's cold the most important pre run ritual for me is a layer of
Chapstick.2. Don't over dress. Too often I leave with too much
clothing on only to end up shedding layers on the roadside, start out
on the cold side and give yourself room to warm up.3. Layer. This
makes heat regulation easier.4. Say away from sweats. Unless your
Rocky, and it's 1976, you have better more breathable options. Cotton
is a terrible exercise fabric.5. Keep your ears covered.6. Start by
running into the wind. This way if you get sweaty and wet you can stay
more comfortable on the way home.7. Get plenty of vitamin C. In fact,
you can mix it in your water and take it on your run with you.8.
Gloves. There a must, remember your hands will be swinging.9. Wear a
hat. A full third of your body heat can be lost through your head, not
to mention the protection from the sun a hat offers.10. Carry your
cell phone. This is good practice at any time of the season but
runners tend to get injured more during cold weather; so it's
