Self-esteem guides an individual to face life's journey with zeal
and overcome challenges with a positive attitude. Low self-esteem
makes the person lose confidence and remain aloof from the society. It
degrades the personality and also affects rational thinking. The
person develops a negative attitude and loses his real potential. The
mental health of a person gets affected in a big way and they become
aggressive. In severe cases, the individual may become depressed and
even attempt suicide. The causes of low self-esteem may be related to
the family background, peers as well as societal status among others.
Negligence: Children who grow up in an environment devoid of love feel
abandoned and worthless. Hence, they are not very social as they find
it difficult to develop trust with others.
 Criticism: Constant
negative criticism makes the individual lose self-confidence. They
become hesitant and develop a pessimistic attitude. If they withdraw
from the society, they end up in depression of various degrees.
Otherwise, they start exhibiting aggressive behavior.
 Family
background: Parents play a major role in developing the self-esteem of
a child. Children from broken or single parent homes tend to develop
low self-esteem unless the family consciously imbibes positivity in
the child.
Failures: People who do not take failures in their
stride develop low self-esteem in the long run.
 Appearance: The
first impression created by a person goes a long way in developing the
relationship. People, who are not happy with their physical
appearance, tend to remain withdrawn in a crowd. This also affects
their self-esteem.
