Do you know the feeling of being in the "flow"? Have you heard about
how a writer loses herself in her writing, how a sculptor becomes one
with the process of sculpting? Whether you are working, participating
in sports, engaged in a conversation or engaged in a hobby, you may
have experienced the suspension of time, the freedom of complete
absorption in activity. This is "flow," an experience that is at once
demanding and rewarding--an experience that Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
says is one of the most enjoyable and valuable experiences a person
can have.Being in the "flow" is being in the present moment, being
totally focused, being mindful. And when we are in this state, no
matter what we are doing, the task at hand is enjoyable. Washing the
dishes becomes enjoyable - the warmth of the water, the soap suds, the
smooth surfaces of the dishes, the shine of the glasses, the way the
dishes are stacked on the dish rack--all enjoyable. So the next time
you are engaged in a task, and you are feeling separate and not
stimulated--doing the laundry again and again--concentrate and focus
on the feeling of the cloth, the color of the clothing, the shape of
the shirts--and enjoy the meditation. All tasks can be
meditations--driving, walking, household chores, tasks at work, making
jewelry, writing a poem, reading a book to your children, skiing,
kayaking, practicing yoga--all opportunities to be in the present
moment and enjoy the valuable experience of being in the "flow".
