Is NATO on Its Last Leg?

There is some talk that the NATO is about caput, and this is good
news for the Russians, who are presently strengthening their military.
It also plays well for the BRIC countries and their new alliances. It
is a godsend to the rapidly growing Chinese military, but it is also
considered quite dangerous for those who study human conflict and
history. For the US, it's a real problem, but, alas this is a long time
coming, and after the major economic catastrophe, the EU nations are
more worried about remaining financially viable, than defending that
which they no longer really have. Not long ago, I read an interesting
piece by Nick Younker titled; "Could the End of NATO and the European
Union Be in Sight?" I guess the title says it all, anyway, go look
this up on the Internet and read it, and then you will understand my
thoughts below.Indeed, this is a real concern. I noted that Greece did
not cut its all its previous orders for military hardware after the
financial reboot, but they did cut some. Then France sells an aircraft
carrier to Russia and yesterday sent its only remaining carrier back
from the Somali pirate duty, after it had technological difficulty.
This latest Strategic Report from the UK was troubling as well - and
the concept of the UK and France getting together to combine, is a
bureaucratic future nightmare with political impasse implications. We
also see Russia in Europe with unspoken threats on natural gas supply,
and today the EU is "telling" Germany to allow Russian Airliners in
unrestricted to foster trade, and this Afghanistan issue is wearing
thin, especially after WikiLeaks - as the European public may be at
wits end. This is a very serious topic, so it's good of Nick to keep
everyone informed, it's good he has brought this topic up, I just hope
folks are indeed listening. Please consider all this.
