Coughing is one of the most irksome aspects of respiratory problems.
Not only does it bother you, the suffering one, it bothers everyone
within hearing distance. There are many home remedies that could
alleviate this condition. Some of them are relatively simple, but
others may require the help of a qualified herbal practitioner.Cherry
bark is one of the remedies that may require the help of someone who
knows herbal remedies well. It works by suppressing the cough reflex,
but the means of doing so is cyanide. Very small amounts can be used
safely, but larger doses could be deadly.I came up with what I call my
"cough tea" when a relative called in the middle of the night. Her
husband had a bad cold and was coughing to much no one could get to
sleep. I asked her what she had in her spice rack, and gave her the
ingredients and instructions. What she used was a combination of stick
cinnamon, allspice and cloves. To her amazement, it worked.Eucalyptus
is a popular ingredient in lozenges, and it can be very helpful.
However, children under two cannot even be around the scent of it
safely, and children under six should not ingest it. It can cause a
serious medical condition otherwise. An age old remedy involves mixing
one part honey to one part lemon juice. This syrup tastes good and is
safe for children two or older. It's one of the few medicines you
might be able to get down a child's throat without an argument.I've
used peppermint for a large variety of reasons, and this is one of
them. You can use the candies or make a tea of the leaves. A packet of
peppermints is a good thing to keep in your purse or pocket,
especially during flu season.A hot shower, vaporizer or steam from
other sources can loosen up the phlegm that causes this issue. If
you're congested, you may want to consider the steam from one part
vinegar to four parts boiling water. This last tip may be problematic
if you have paroxysmal type coughing. Inhaling it could be a really
bad idea. Mix a teaspoon of salt into a glass of hot water, and gargle
it. If there is any chance that you will start coughing without
warning, don't attempt this method. If the coughing is intense, has
gone on for quite a while or if you have trouble breathing, it's time
for the doctor. Other symptoms of trouble include pressure in your
chest, coughing up phlegm that is white, green and/or streaked with
red as well as a high fever.
