Often when people are facing a difficult situation, they do not even
know what they feel, let alone what to do with their feelings. If you
ask them if the are sad, afraid, angry or guilty, they are likely to
say "All of the above!" or "I don't know, I just feel bad!" If left in
this state for long enough frustration and exhaustion are likely to
follow!There is something you can do to untangle this web of emotions.
Once people are clear about what they are feeling they can be
empowered by learning what those emotions are trying to tell them. The
next step is problem solving.This is a quick self-hypnosis technique
that you can learn to do on your own. Take a breath in and breathe out
slowly. Repeat this process 10 times until you begin to notice that
you are becoming calmer. You may want to continue breathing in this
manner if it feels good to you. At some point you can relax your
eyelids and just let them close. Allow your shoulders to drop. Open
your hands. Loosen your jaw. Get comfortable.Next I would like you to
imagine a tangled web of yarn or string. There are four strands in the
web. Notice that one of the strands is a bright yellow. Imagine
untangling the yellow string and stretching it out before you.
Good.This yellow string represents fear.Next, I would like you to
notice a red string. Go ahead and untangle it and stretch it out
before you.The red string represents anger.Next, take note of a blue
string. It could be bright blue, or sky blue, or navy, it really
doesn't matter.
Untangle it from the others and stretch it out before
you.The blue string represents sadness, loss or loneliness.Finally,
notice a deep green string. Stretch it out beside the others.The green
string represents guilt.Sitting before you are 4 tags in four colors,
yellow, red, blue and green.....there is also a white tag.The white
tag is written on, it says "Happiness....Enjoy!"Now you turn over the
yellow tag. It says....."Fear. Is there something to be afraid of
realistically? What can you do to be safe. Make an effort to become
safe from realistic dangers. If it is not a fear based on reality, let
this string go." Attach this tag to the yellow string.Now turn over
the red tag. It says......"Anger." Has someone been unfair to you? If
the situation is realistically unfair and if it is safe to do so make
an effort to make it fair. If it is not safe, seek assistance. If it
is not a realistic unfairness, let this string go."The blue tag
says....."Sadness." Have you realistically lost something or someone?
Are you lonely? If this is a realistic appraisal make an effort to
make healthy connections with people or seek out the healthy things
you need. If this is not a realistic appraisal, let this string
go."The green tag says...."Guilt." Have you been realistically unfair
to someone. If possible make it fair. If not and if this is not based
in reality, let this string go.Now, hold the happiness tag against
your heart. Feel it resonate throughout your body and mind filling you
with a sense of a healing light. Enjoy.Notice the strands whenever you
