How to Train Your Employees Effectively

Many employers spend money on training employees, with no
recognition of whether the training is actually what is needed, or
even if it has been effective once completed. Here are three steps you
can take to train your employees more effectively:1. Begin by
assessing training needs early onIt is better to recognize a need for
training, before the employee (or the company) are adversely affected
by the lack of necessary skills. The first step should consist of
checking the employee's current skill level, if any, as well as what
their anticipated new skill level will be after the training. This
way, once the training is complete, the expected results can be
checked to see if they in fact match or exceed the anticipated
results. If the training does not meet the anticipated results, then
either it should be discontinued or extensively changed, so that it
will be much more effective for employees in the future.2. Have
employees who are being trained, learn from the best at the
skillWhether employees are brand new, or already existing employees,
it is always best for them to learn any new skills from those who are
exceptional at them. This helps them enormously, since they learn good
habits from the start, and can then devote less time to improving the
skill, and more towards actually using it. This is much better than
acquiring bad habits as part of learning the skill, and then having to
spend more time re-learning the skill properly later on. Although it
may take more time initially or cost a bit more, the long-term savings
are usually well worth the additional investment.3. Follow-up
properlyAfter training in a new skill, it is important for employees
not to slip back into old, bad habits which they might have had
before. At this point, follow-up training, or additional coaching can
be useful to ensure that the new skills are being consistently used.
Having the right standards for measuring the use of the new skill is
extremely helpful, so that the difference in employee performance can
be verified and further improved. As you can tell, training employees
to develop their skills can be quite involved. You should begin by
assessing their needs, proceed by having them learn from the best
experts who are available, and then follow-up properly by measuring
the results of the training program. By doing so, you will be able to
determine if your training is effective at getting the results you
seek.Copyright 2010, by Marc Mays
