Newcomers to gardening sometimes get a little worried about sowing
seeds but it really isn't that difficult. And sowing hardy annuals is
just the same as sowing vegetables or sowing any seeds outside so once
you've got the bang of it you can grow an enormous range of hardy
plants. These are the points to bear in mind.1. Remove all weeds and
weed roots from the place where the seeds are to go. Leave them in and
they'll smother your flowers in no time.2. Break up the soil with a
border fork or garden rake so that it is fine and crumbly and remove
any stones or large clods.3. lf the soil is very sticky clay or very
gravelly and sandy, fork in some peat.4. Spread 20oz per sq yd (60g
per sq m) of grow more evenly over the area to be sown and rake it
into the surface.5. lf you are sowing a lot of different varieties in
one bed mark out the spaces for each one by drawing lines with a piece
of stick and dropping the seed packet on the soil where it is to be
sown. Don'! forget to put the tall ones towards the back.6. Check the
sowing distances on the packet and draw lines in the soil accordingly
in each space. About in (13mm) deep is about right.7- Snip the top fo
the seed packet with a pair of scissors, make a crease half may along
one of the sides at the mouth of the packet and gently tap the seeds
out along the crease. scattering them about in (6mm) apart.8. Cover
the seed using the back of the rake to draw a little soil over the
seeds then tap it gently with the flat of the rake.9. When the seeds
appear them then out to the distances recommended on the packet and
make sure any weeds which appear are removed.10. Water in very dry
weather. watch for pests and diseases and spray if necessary, stake
taller varieties if necessary and a display is more or less
guaranteed.
