Tarifa used to be a military fortress and fishing town in the days
gone by, but today it is a hub of tourism and cultural activities. The
various cultural settlements over the years gone by have left a mark
of its own on Tarifa. Right from the dwellings of ancient roman
travelers to the old medina ways and the modern sixties of the
hippies, Tarifa has seen it all. It was sometime during the mid 60's
when Tarifa changed herself completely and became a well settled spot
for tourists from across the globe to come visit and stay, the beaches
being the main attraction but not the only one to enjoy.Tarifa is
situated in Spain and is in proximity to North Africa, which is around
fourteen kilometers from the southern tip of the European continent.
Windsurfer's paradise is what Tarifa is termed as, the Andalusian town
is still pristine and untouched even though tourism is at its peak
these days. The flora and fauna of Tarifa is well taken care of by the
Spanish authorities and when you come into Tarifa, you would be
greeted by the most warm and friendly people around. One could use
ferries or even local coaches to get into or out of Tarifa. If you
fancy the game of golf then Tarifa has the best golf courses in all of
Europe, namely the Dehesa Montenmedio and also the famous Benalup golf
& country club, to name a few. The environment for the golfing
activities is natural, so along with a game of golf one would have the
best visual treat to the eyes.Since Tarifa is close to the strait of
Gibraltar, whale watching is an important activity for the tourists
and locals alike. One would find whales during the feeding periods and
the species include the sperm whale which come by in march and july
and even the killer whales which appear around the months of July and
September. The fin whale is a migratory species to be seen during May
and July.Windsurfing and kitesurfing activities are strongly favored
in Tarifa, especially near the Los Lances beach to Bolonia and
Valdevaqueros. Peak season for windsurfing would be march to October,
where one would be addicted to the strong winds of the Gibraltar and
for kitesurfing, the best time to go would be the same. In short if
you want to surf, dive or swim in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic,
Tarifa wont disappoint you.Lets talk about food, our favourite, local
food is what we recommend and it is cheap on your pocket as well. Tuna
and swordfish is what they eat a lot and serve their guests as well,
you can even gorge on the Tortillas de camarn", which is a speciality
and yet want more. Finally, to describe Tarifa in a page would be
impossible because there is so much to see, experience and talk about
the city. You sure would want to stay more and live your life there
because the people, the place and the weather would tickle every rib
in your body and pamper you silly.
