The federal government has recently stepped in and passed laws that
provide relief to consumers who find themselves with more than $10,000
in unsecured debt. These new laws provide credit card debt settlement
relief to those who need it most in today's poor economy. More and
more Americans are starting to take advantage of these new laws in
order to get themselves out of debt, that would have otherwise been
left unpaid. The Debt Relief Act of 2010 states that Americans with
high amounts of debt can seek the assistance of a settlement company
to work on their behalf in offering settlements to credit card
companies. These settlement companies are able to contact creditors on
the behalf of the debtor and offer settlements, sometimes offering up
to a 60% settlement on the existing debt. Once the process is
completed, this provides credit settlement relief to millions of
Americans.Credit card companies are very aware of the poor economy and
how it has affected millions of Americans. These companies are
agreeing to generous debt settlement deals in order to avoid being
left with bad debt. Without agreeing to a settlement, chances are the
debt would be left unpaid, leaving the credit card companies with no
choice but to sell the debt in some cases to a collection agency.
Typically, when a debt is sold to a collection agency, the debt is
only sold for pennies on the dollar. Collection agencies are also not
very successful in being able to collect on the original debt. Credit
card companies are more willing to work with their existing consumers
to provide credit settlement relief.Once a consumer has enrolled with
a debt settlement company, the debt settlement company is responsible
for making monthly payments to all creditors once an agreement has
been reached. This stops any and all collection calls that a debtor
may have been receiving, providing another form of relief. Any fees
that a debt settlement company charges for the use of their services,
can only be charged once a settlement has been reached.
