The two broad categories here are either therapy or taking
medication. When it comes to therapy you can either choose
psychotherapy or electroconvulsive therapy. Psychotherapy is when
therapy is used with medication alongside. It is not exactly taken to
be 100% effective but to a large extent it works on reducing any
disruptive behaviour during mania episodes or
depression.Electroconvulsive therapy on the other hand is effective up
to 70% where other treatments have not been able to show their effect.
Usually used as a last resort, it is not the most preferred treatment
and can result in temporary memory loss. With medication, a number of
anti-depressants or salts can be used. You can also use alternative
home remedies or natural remedies. We would not recommend using the
latter alone but along with the medication prescribed by the doctor.
Anti-depressants are not advised as they can trigger off mania in some
persons suffering from Bipolar disorder. These are the first to be
prescribed by any expert.Lithium is a known medication that works but
has to be taken in the right amount which may vary from person to
person. Too less may not be effective and too much can be hazardous.
Hence, in the initial stages of the medication, it is gauged what
amount is right and if it can be taken for the long haul treatment.
Lithium has minor side effects that wear off in some time but note, in
women it can cause complications in the children to be borne.A
family's support and also friends can work magic. A good routine and
some activity and exercise are ideal for a daily routine. Omega 3
fatty acids have been discovered to be a great source that can reduce
any episodes and also help health. Other that medication, you can also
include in diet items rich in Omega 3 fatty acids then.
