There is an old saying that goes, "a dog without fleas is a dog
without a heart beat." Fleas are common. A single flea produces two
hundred eggs. A few fleas can turn into a few thousand within
weeks.Fleas are the most common cause of the itchy, scratching dog. It
is easy to diagnose. The reason for this is the pattern to the itch is
diagnostic. The itch develops on the caudal trunk of the lower back,
the base of the tail and the tummy. Dogs will often mutilate the base
of their back and the base of the tail. They will stand under trees
and chairs and rub until they bleed. All dogs get fleas and it isn't a
reflection of your personal hygiene, but allergic dogs are a special
case, in that they are highly sensitive to fleas. These dogs have a
fairly typical pattern. The dogs scratch and chew their lower back and
the base of the tail. They are usually itchy on their tummy also.
Fleas won't always be found. There may be flea dirt in the coat. The
flea lifecycle lasts only 3 weeks. The flea lifecycle is the same as a
butterfly in that it starts with an egg, turns into a larvae and then
a pupae before becoming an adult flea. There are many very satisfactory
flea controls on the market. One of the newest flea controls is the
best. This product is comfortis and can be purchased at your
veterinarian or on line. Fleas develop resistance quickly to chemicals
and some of the older products are becoming less effective.
