Home Thermal Energy Saving Tips

The way we use technology is very wasteful. Energy is consumed at a
high rate by power hungry appliances. Cutting back on some of these
will help protect the environment and lower our bills. One of the
biggest uses of energy at home is heat. The heating bill is usually
the biggest one of all. But, there are some things that a homeowner
can do to decrease their heating bill. And it won't even cost a pretty
penny. Many people start to panic when they hear "home improvement".
This has nothing to so with Tim 'the Toolman' Taylor. Home
improvements cost money. But not all improvements have to expensive.
Arguably, the cost of these improvements will be cheaper over time as
you pay less expensive heating bills.Lots of homes let heat escapes.
This is very wasteful. A lot of homes have drafts, which lets the
freezing wind in during the winter. Heating the house becomes more
difficult. Up to 20% of a house's heat escape through drafts. If you
can find out where those drafts originate, you'll be able to save a
lot of heat and money too. Place your hand around the edges of the
doors and the windows. Wet your hands in order to make it more
sensitive to the movement of air. If you feel the movement of the cold
air, congratulations. You have just discovered a draft source. Once
you have found it there are a bunch of things that you can do. Around
exterior or interior doors, use draft excluders. Use a filler or a
sealant to fill in any crevices or cracks on window frames, floors or
floor boards. During the day, open the curtains or the blinds to let
the warmth in and then close them at night to in order to trap the
heat.Turning down your thermostat will also save on your heating bill.
Just a one degree difference can result in 5% energy savings. A
difference of one degree is barely noticeable. Save on your heating
bill by not heating unused rooms. 2 zone heating can also make a
difference. If you live in a house with two or more floors and each
floor is controlled by its own thermostat, save energy by turning the
thermostat down on the floor that you are not using when your family
is sleeping. The most cost efficient way to save energy is proper
insulation. Up to a third of your house's heat escapes through the
roof. Check your roof a few days after it snows. Does it start to melt
faster than the snow on your neighbor's roofs? If so then your
insulation is probably lacking. There are many varieties of affordable
insulation products available. Cavity wall insulation is also another
fine investment. It prevents another third of the house's warmth from
being wasted. Follow these simple advices. You'll have the same heat
while saving energy and your money.
