Public management refers to the management of non-profit and
government entities. It is offered as a separate course of study. In
different countries, various entities are involved in the field. For
example, in the US, it is the American Society for Public
Administration in Trace, it is the cole nationale d'administration
and in Switzerland, it is the IDHEAP (Institut des hautes tudes en
administration publique).Since managing government activities is an
extensive affair with entangled webs, it is necessary for public
managers to be adept at handling the many constraints that come along
with it such as budget constraints, red tape, hiring problems and much
more. It is important for managers to overcome such challenges to work
effectively. Many are of the opinion that public management activities
in government and non-profit organization administration are similar
to that seen in the private sector. In fact, there is a suggestion
that government officials can check out management methods used in the
private sector. A significant aspect about public management is
government performance auditing which is highly important as it
enables people to compare various government administrators. In the
United States, the New Public Administration (NPM) is responsible for
using market mechanisms in traditional management practices.Public
management activities are quite complex because they are large in
their scale of operations and they have a direct effect on the public
and so must be handled in the most optimal manner to ensure that
long-term benefits are real and strong. Management of public projects
is also affected by lack of competition for the government and also
due to anti-monopoly laws. It is vital to hire the right processional
so that conduct of various government undertakings is handled
according to rules laid down and in a sound and efficient manner.
