Throughout the article we will discuss what whole grains are, as well
as the benefits of cooking with whole grains. We will also discuss
several different whole grain products. To begin our discussion, let's
familiarize ourselves with the concept of whole grains. As the name
states, whole grain foods are produced from a whole grain seed,
sometimes referred to as a kernel. Whole grains consist of three
things: the outer layer (Bran), the inner part (Endosperm), and the
sprout (Germ). When cooking with whole grain foods it is important to
make sure that the food is 'whole' grain and not 'refined' grain.
While whole grains contain a wide variety of nutrients, refined grains
have many of the nutrients removed. In order for a food product to be
considered whole grain it must contain a minimum of 51% whole grains.
To determine whether or not a product is whole grain, refer to the
ingredient label. Labels of whole grain foods will include an
ingredient of 'whole wheat', 'whole meal', or 'whole corn'.Nutrition
experts suggest that we eat at least 3 servings of whole grains every
day. Why? Because whole grains contain a variety of nutrients,
vitamins, and minerals that are beneficial to our health and that help
to promote weight loss. Let's take a look at some of the different
types of whole grains that you may want to consider cooking for your
next meal. One of the most commonly cooked whole grains is brown rice.
Brown rice is much healthier than white rice. Why? Because in brown
rice, the entire grain is intact (it has the Bran, Endosperm, and
Germ). White rice, however, only contains the endosperm, and thus
lacks many of the nutrients provided by brown rice. Next time you eat
consider eating rice, choose the healthier alternative.Oats are
another popular type of whole grain. Like many grains, oats are not
processed to remove the bran and germ, thereby retaining all of their
nutritional value. Oats are extremely high in protein and contain
vitamin B, beta-glucan, and fiber. To make your own oats, purchase oat
groats and boil them in two parts water for every one part groat for
approximately 40 minutes. Whole grain oats can also be purchased as a
cereal for better convenience.Other popular whole grain foods that can
be cooked are whole grain pastas, barley, buckwheat berries, cracked
wheat, and polenta. A favourite of many who eat whole grain foods is
popcorn. Because popcorn tastes so good, many people eat it without
even realizing it is a whole grain! To keep your diet healthy, head to
your local supermarket and pick up some whole grain cooking foods now.
For maximized benefits, be sure to eat at least three servings of
whole wheat each day.
