Why Diabetic Shoes Are So Important

Do you know why diabetic shoes are so important to wear? Many
diabetics know that they should be wearing special shoes for diabetes
but a lot of these same people don't understand why it is so important
if their feet look and feel just like they did before they were
diagnosed with the condition. It is easy to rationalize that diabetes
is a condition that has little to do with one's physical body when all
the daily concern is focused on controlling one's blood sugar and
insulin levels.Despite the overwhelming emphasis on blood sugar
control in people diagnosed with type-2 diabetes, taking care of one's
feet should be just as important. There are a number of reasons this
is so but in general taking care of your feet with diabetes is akin to
investing for one's future. You may not see immediate benefits but as
time progresses the benefits become quite large. The reason for this is
because of the basic way that diabetes affects your body. Even when
you are effective at managing your blood sugar levels your body still
goes through unusually high periods of blood sugar and insulin. The
levels may not ever get dangerously high in the short run but the
slightly elevated levels which happen routinely over the course of a
few years slowly start taking a toll on the body. And the feet
typically are one of the first areas to be affected in the long
run. When diabetes starts progressing the damage that elevated insulin
and blood sugar inflicts on your body manifests itself in one of two
ways or both ways in conjunction. The first is by damaging the
circulatory system in your feet and the second by damaging the nerves
in your outer extremities such as your feet. The result of this is
poor circulation and poor healing in the feet and poor sensitivity in
the feet to pain or irritation. The combination of these two leaves
you prone to hurting your feet due to insensitivity and a poor ability
to heal due to the reduction of blood flow.Wearing diabetic shoes is
so important because they are designed to protect the feet and
minimize any and all forms of irritation and pressure points. They
basically make it much harder for your feet to become damaged by
nicks, cuts, rashes, blisters, or any other foot problem. The thought
process is that if you can protect your feet from damage then they
will be healthy enou8gh for you to remain active and exercising which
is the primary way of treating diabetes outside of medicinal
intervention. If you develop foot ulcer and can't walk then how are
you going to effectively exercise? Wearing the proper shoes is vastly
important and should be mandatory for anyone with middle to late stage
diabetes.
