By far the most comfortable garments are made from wool. It has a
soothing warm, comforting feeling and for smalls is unbeatable for
comfort and warmth. Why it is not the most chosen fabric, particularly
for toddlers is really difficult to see.The biggest objection to wool
seems to be a perception that it will shrink. It does shrink, but not
easily at all.Wool shrinks with vigorous agitation when wet. It is
water and vigorous agitation that does it, not a normal wash and
gentle spin.Shrink proofing wool was first done in 1938 so the
know-how has been around for a long time now and the expertise is well
developed and widely used.The Wool Mark label is a guarantee of
quality and reputedly the most recognized logo in the word. There are
three logos each for a different wool content. Each logo incorporates

finely woven or knitted garments is worsted wool. The yarn has been
made out of long thin strands of wool, tightly twisted together to
give a strong, soft flexible yarn with high durability. This is the
yarn used in men's socks, suits and finely knitted clothing. It can be
woven or knitted. When knitted it is strong and smooth enough to use
very fine needles giving soft fabric with smooth handle and
warmth.Wool yarn is coarser, weaker and not as smooth and, with some
stick out bits. This is often used for hand knitting and uses much
thicker needles.Artificial wool is called acrylic and often blended
with wool to lower the price, dry faster or other reasons.Wool is to a
degree stain resistant and the most naturally burn resistant of all
fibers commonly used for clothing.It has soft, luxurious feel or
handle with, wonderful drape and is very crease resistant. Knitted
garments are almost impossible to crease, while creases in woven cloth
will usually disappear with normal hanging.In spite of its winter wear
connotation it is very good for all round wear. Ask any man who
habitually wears wool socks. They are comfortable all year round.When
buying a wool garment check the care label for the wool mark and
washing instructions, if it has the mark and has been treated with a
shrink resisting treatment such as superwash as a garment it will be
great.
